I don't go because I don't have the luxury of the time and money it takes. And even if I did I may not go either. I have always felt that all that time, money, energy, ect..., would be better spent on other things that are more of a priority. Kind of like how I feel about the "gay community" and the difference between the "Gay Pride Parade" and the Aids Walk. Askewed priorities in my opinion. Or the cost of the war abroad. How many billions? That money could have served such better purposes here at home. I'm sure my opinions would probably not be popular with most burners. But they are still how I feel. Even though I've never been. Perhaps if I go sometime I'll feel differently but I doubt it. But I never say never. I think. : ) -

I'm there for community. If you're not about making a better community and by extension a better life for all of us I want absolutely nothing to do with you.
Larry Harvey's heard it all, too, from "sex party in the desert", to "hippie Woodstock lollapalooza". Burningman offers participants a good time, to be sure, but unless you're going there with the intent of following the 10 Principles of Burningman (including gifting, radical self-reliance, community, decommodification, leave no trace, etc..) you're not getting the point at all.
Wendy, it's great to be snarky. But if you're going to sit and snipe and be snarky about something about which you have no clue, I guess ignorance is its own best defense against enlightenment.
And Loki.......BM is still a great thing....if you go to a regional event. -

The comparison doesn't hold, Wendy. Sorry. The Love Parade hasn't started a whole series of events with the same goals and ends like Burningman has. If you've never attended a regional event, you don't know what you're talking about. I've attended regional events (note t he plural) long before I made the decision to go to the desert. As far as the conditions of the BLM permit go, I'm fully aware of them, and the efforts made by the community AND the DPW to go the distance to leave no trace after the event.

DPW = Division of Public Works, Black Rock City, Nevada. These are the volunteers and paid staff that put up and take down the Burningman event.

I went to BM 5 times (I think) - never paid once. Always worked like a bottled demon. You may have seen me with what's now Gamelan X chanting daily at center camp on my last visit in 2002 - I was camping with Opera that year. If you actually caught the opera itself you're one of the few that have had the pleasure of seeing my gargantuan balls. -
