It's always been my favorite holiday, and I'll be living it to its fullest today as the first Halloween with my husband :)

I truly believe it's the only thing the Catholics ever did right.
That, and giving me an early acquired taste for red wine :D

Please, everyone enjoy it!

Happy Halloween Pinky! Congratulations on it being your first with your husband. On the 21st of this month I celebrated one year of actually living with my partner, so this is our second Halloween together. We have some turkey legs and sweet potatos in foil on the pit, two 30 packs of beer and a pecan piem Mack dont drink, but when my brother gets off work from Firestone and our other friends get here, it's going down like 4 flat tires!!! We have a shitload of candy for the kiddos too. We were going to dress up, but they had a fire at Firestone the other day and they went to ten hour days, so we're just going to have a party.

God, I LOVE Tom Lehrer. Do you know how much geek cred you can get at a con if you've memorized "The Elements"?

      www.youtube.com/watch

It never ceases to amaze me that he can sing this song at all, but the fact that he can do it while playing the damn piano is STUNNING.

Happy Halloween, everyone! It will be for me, because today's a cheat day on my diet. :)

          Bishop Slams Halloween

          weblogs.baltimoresun.com/news/...n.html

"In an article in L'Osservatore Romano, the Holy See says Halloween is a pagan celebration of "terror, fear and death." The official Vatican paper warns parents against allowing children to dress up as ghosts and ghouls."

Now let me get this straight. A man who represents a religion where the main symbol is some hapless guy nailed and bleeding on a cross who has a father (who is really himself but I digress) who will send you to a lake of fire if you step out of line is compaining about celebrating terror, fear and death?

It makes me want to go out and join a coven. I actually have a good friend who is a practicing witch. She is a teacher at a local high school and very involved in humanitarian causes. A number of people I know are practicing Pagans. In fact I will be going to a Samhain ritual with some of them tonight. Personally I find the bloody history of Christian inquisitions, crusades and witch burnings to be a lot scarier than any Halloween fantasy. Thank goodness that silly little man in the Vatican no longer has any power beyond his little death cult.

The funny thing about Halloween is it's entirely the Catholic church's creation (what's currently celebrated, anyway).

Samhain, the Celtic New Year, held on what is now the last day of October, was a harvest festival, celebrating the final harvest time before the harsh winter. During the Christian takeover of the Roman Empire, they adopted a great deal of Pagan traditions and modified them to fit their own; at first it was to try and blend in with Paganism whilst Christianity was outlawed, then it was to help recruit converts whilst they outlawed Paganism.

Holy authorities would go door to door, asking for handouts in exchange for blessing the residence, supposedly threatening curses upon those who turned them away (although I think that was more just an assumption of the time than an actual practice). People eventually adopted dressing as spirits, faes and other superstitious creatures which the Pagans did originally as a sign of respect.

And now the Catholics (and other Christians) are calling what they themselves created evil Pagan practices, saying, "Hey, let's turn it into a Harvest Festival instead!"

            Oh the irony.

          "Enjoy it, Enrika!"

Thanks! My roommate and I are going to rent a couple of scary movies. We're thinking Haunting in Connecticut, and maybe either The Ring (which we've both seen) or Phantasm (which I've seen but she hasn't... hee :) ).

      Congrats on your...live-together-versary? LOL

It sounds like the two of you have some great plans! Hubby and I are doing it simple this year. While it is my favorite holiday and I can't wait to be able to go all out (I'd love to host my own party or even a Haunted House - or combine them!), I know that we've got tons of much better things to spend our money on right now. The dress I'm wearing I bought with a $50 gift card a friend of ours gave us to Hustler Hollywood and a little extra cash (and it is KILLER), Bret's throwing together an outfit from random shit in his closet and we both picked up a pair of $15 custom Scarecrow fangs. Vampire has always been my fallback costume :D Once we're all dressed up we've got a party to go to at our friends' house to drink, dance, punch a black cat pinata, pin the stem on the pumpkin, and welcome in the Celtic New Year!

      FUCK I love Halloween!

Seriously everyone - and I do mean everyone - enjoy this special holiday however you can! Happy Halloween and a Blessed Samhain!

WHAT A PARTY!!!!! We ended up with a third party in our bed this morning as we had a few friends stay over so they didnt have to drive after drinking. One of our friends told a few guys at the dorm and we ended up with about 10 more Lamar students here. I'm glad we live in a three bedroom house! We broke out the extra blankets and moved the coffee table out of the living room as we broke out the Christopher Lee Dracula movies. It was chilly outside and the only heat we use is our oven and a space heater which is still in storage. My brother had to leave early because they have bumped them up to 16hr days due to the fire.

We dont have any openly gay friends, but it was weird that nobody brought a date. There were no girls at our party and we did not design it that way. They know Mack and I are a couple and they are extremely cool with us. We joke around back and forth all the time but they know we dont cross any lines. Unless it is mutual. Like when this guy Don was acting like he was going to kiss Mack and make me jealous.Ha!Ha! We have a very open relationship and we are very pleasure oriented. I told Don that I didnt think he had the guts to do it. So he goes to kiss Mack and Mack layed one on him in return. Every since then when we greet Don he gives us both a big hug and a kiss. It's really cool too because he is fuckin incredibly sexy. All of our college friends are awesome.
